True Blood Rolling Stone Cover Story

“To me, vampires are sex,” says show creator Alan Ball. “I don’t get a vampire story about abstinence. I’m 53. I don’t care about high school students. I find them irritating and uninformed.”
Take that, Twilight fans.
Says Stephen Moyer, who plays a vampire who dates back to the Civil War, “If we go from a base level, vampires create a hole in the neck where there wasn’t one before.” It’s a de-flowering of sorts, he says. “So that’s pretty sexy. I think that makes vampires attractive.” He laughs a little. “Plus, Robert Pattinson is just hot, right?”
Needless to say, when I saw the cover of the September 2, 2010 issue of Rolling Stone, I drooled. Not for the blood-covered 1,000 year old vampire nor the Englishman holding onto Anna Paquin’s naked breast, but for the art director who thought up this shot in the first place and the photographer who captured it. Bravo, Matthew Rolston!
This issue is available tomorrow (August 18th) on newsstands, and Friday (August 20th) online via Rolling Stone’s premium subscription plan. While the article is about the TV show True Blood, it’s the photographs that are breathtaking in their eeriness and sheer audacity. Alan Ball talks a bit about the show in the RSM article:
“To me, vampires are sex. I don’t get a vampire story about abstinence. I’m 53. I don’t care about high school students. I find them irritating and uninformed.”
With True Blood, sex is sliced, diced, and spliced on the screen. It comes in every form: gay, straight, human on supernatural, and supernatural on supernatural. It’s bloody, but not necessarily violent.
Stephen Moyer — who plays Bill Compton, the undead Southern Civil War Veteran — explains:
“If we go from a base level, vampires create a hole in the neck where there wasn’t one before. It’s a de-virginization — breaking the hymen, creating blood and then drinking the virginal blood. And there’s something sharp, the fang, which is probing and penetrating and moving into it. So that’s pretty sexy. I think that makes vampires attractive.”
The photograph itself is sexy in its lighting, its posing, and its effects. What do you think? Sexy shot — or a bit too creepy with their naked, blood-spattered selves.
